Kaelen Drake
Sea monster hunter who led the Aurost Rebellion and gave his name to Port Kaelen.
Appearance
No portrait of him was painted in his lifetime. The ones seen in the city today were made later, from what those who knew him told. They show a man in his mid-thirties, with curly brown hair and a short beard. He wears a red wool cap and a leather apron over woolens worn by salt. In every one he carries the harpoon of his trade, the tool that earned him the respect of the docks before anyone followed him to war.
History
Kaelen Drake lived in Aurost, the port at the mouth of the Golden River, and made his living hunting the beasts that harry ships in Verdalia Bay. It was a trade of few, and it made him known among sailors and fishermen.
In the days of King Gooley, the kingdom was ruled from the court with an iron hand. When Aurost rose against the king, Kaelen took command of the revolt. He died in the fighting, before he could see the city free. The rebels finally drove out the king’s troops, and the city took his name.
He wanted Aurost to stop obeying a king who bled it dry. The city achieved it, and it was the only one in the kingdom that did.
In memory
The sailors of Port Kaelen say that Kaelen went on leading his people after his death. According to that legend, he was seen at the head of the rebels in the last battle, until the last of the king’s soldiers had left the city. At the court of Vesper, that legend is not repeated.
